Scrutinise the candidates.  Look for people who understand the issues, who have the ability, competence and capacity to relay the community’s opinions, desires and concerns in the local government decision making process.

Advocacy of constituents is also paramount.  A person’s education, occupation and involvement in the community are helpful measures.  Are they approachable and will listen to your views?
